Midsummer Night Song
Dusk settles softly as the sun sinks low
Summer days long as the waving corn rows
Wind rustles soft through the trees as it blows
Soft blue replaces sunset’s rosy glow
Leftover heat hangs heavy in the air
Low dark clouds hold a promise and a prayer
Dusk fades to twilight and dark closes in
Creatures awake and their night-songs begin
First start the crickets with their soothing din
Katydids rasping their sweet song blend in
The owls and the whippoorwills set the pace
In harmony bullfrogs sing out the bass
Bright the moon rises and bright it shines down
Stars, twinkling gently, peek out from the clouds
Below in darkness of trees, grass, and ground
Other lights shimmer, shine, and dance about
As if to mirror the heavenly lights
Sparkle together a host of fireflies
The chorus of songs, the fireflies’ spark
Benevolent gleaming of moon and stars
Beautiful chaos heard just in the dark
Cacophony touching their Maker’s heart
But little they care if humans should hear
Their voices in praise meant just for His ears
